A blankie for lucie

My grandmother used to knit a lot. I’m not sure if she’s the one who taught me or if my mum did. But I remember seing her often with needles and yarn, knitting stuff for her numerous grandchildren.
Then she got parkinson’s desease and gradually could not do a lot of the things she used to. But she wanted to keep doing “something”. The lady who takes care of her showed her how to crochet granny squares and she started to make baby blankies for her great-grandchildren. Always the same colours, same design. She gave us one when Prune was born, and I loved using it because I was never afraid the babies couldn’t breathe if they were under the blankie. Maud still sleeps every night with it.

Now my grandmother’s sickness has gotten worse and she said she can’t crochet any more. A few months ago she gave me a little bag with the last 2 squares she had made and the leftover yarn. I was happy to have it, knew I’d have to make something special with it although I wasn’t too sure what.

Then last month my niece Lucie was born. They live far away on a sunny island (yeah, lucky them !) and are here this month to visit. Suddenly I realised she needed a little blankie, which would be the perfect use for those leftover squares. I didn’t take the time to plan ahead and just crocheted away. If I did I would have thought of something prettier but oh well.. And now I just want to be done so little Lucie can use her new blankie before she goes back in the land of perpetual summer… Plus it’s snowing like crazy here these days so she needs it NOW !! ;-) I’ve actually nearly finished it now…
ETA: Added the finished blankie. I hope it looks a little less crooked after blocking. I really enjoyed making it and I see a lot of granny-squarish projects in the future. I’m already dreaming of flared pants for the girls (well initially I was seing them for myself, but it’d take too long to line them !! :-P )

Hope you all had a happy Easter week-end btw. We were with my brother (Lucie’s dad) and his little family. We hadn’t seen them for 2 years and it was great to see them and lucie’s older sister who grew up so much in between. Was great to see the 3 cousins play together. And with all that snow, we made snowmen and they sledged. Great week-end !

NB: One last word: look at this lady’s work. Amazing !
